In Greek Mythology, Prometheus (forethought) is a Titan celebrated as the champion of humanity and a symbol of intellectual defiance.

Prometheus was humanity's protector. In some traditions (notably Ovid's Metamorphoses), he sculpted the first humans out of clay and water in the image of the gods. He also taught them essential survival skills: astronomy, mathematics, medicine, metalworking, and writing.

Prometheus represents planning, intellect, and long-term vision. He embodies the moral courage to challenge unjust authority for a greater good. He fought for the vulnerable, stealing fire from Olympus and delivering it to mortals. Fire represented warmth, technology, civilization, and divine knowledge. Defying Zeus's decree, he was chained to a rock in the Caucasus Mountains. An eagle devoured his liver daily; because he was immortal, the liver regenerated each night, making his torment eternal. His suffering illustrates that advancement and knowledge come with pain and sacrifice. Civilization is born from transgression.

In modern science and ethics, debates about AI, genetic engineering, and nuclear technology frequently invoke his myth to discuss responsibility and unintended consequences. Carl Jung saw Prometheus as representing the individuation process, the painful integration of consciousness and the burden of self awareness.

The Stoics and Moralists interpreted him as an allegory for human reason enduring suffering. His torment symbolized the wise person's resilience against fortune's cruelty. The physical punishment became metaphorical for inner fortitude.
